In the high-wire act that is modern commerce, risk comes in many forms—cyber incidents, data privacy issues, and operational disruptions, to name a few. Yet, the most insidious threat may lie in bribery and corruption that can quietly infiltrate your third-party relationships. Businesses often enhance defenses against cyberattacks and vendor issues, but neglecting anti-bribery and anti-corruption (ABAC) measures leaves doors open to severe repercussions, including regulatory fines and reputational damage.

You don’t have to look far for cautionary tales. Just ask any leader whose brand has made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

With global enforcement intensifying and hefty fines capturing headlines, the message is unmistakable: neglecting ABAC compliance is not merely risky; it invites significant trouble.

The Third-Party Blindspot: A Pathway for Corruption

Third-party partnerships are a major avenue for bribery and corruption globally, as risks can often be overlooked in the rush to close deals. Executives eager to finalize agreements—especially across intricate international supply chains—might forego essential due diligence. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” is far from a viable compliance strategy; it nearly guarantees heightened regulatory attention.

It’s crucial to remember that you are accountable for the actions of your partners as if they were your own. Regulators, stakeholders, and customers now expect the same stringent standards applied to third, fourth, and Nth-party relationships as to internal teams. Ignorance is not a defense, and manual processes can no longer keep pace with today’s complexities.

Complexity, Sanctions, and the Rising Cost of Non-Compliance

The stakes for compliance have escalated. Organizations face an intricate web of ABAC regulations that require proactive and integrated management. The risks extend beyond fines, encompassing reputational harm, loss of competitive edge, and operational turmoil.

This year has brought significant shifts in ABAC laws impacting organizations with extensive third-party networks:

  • FCPA and FEPA: The U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) remains the benchmark for addressing foreign bribery. The newly proposed Foreign Extortion Prevention Act (FEPA) expands criminal liability for foreign officials soliciting bribes, increasing corporate risks in vital markets.
  • UKBA and Failure to Prevent Fraud: The UK Bribery Act (UKBA) continues to be a leading anti-bribery law. A new “Failure to Prevent Fraud” offense, effective September 2025, holds companies automatically liable for fraud by employees or associates unless they can demonstrate “reasonable procedures”.
  • EU’s Draft Anti-Corruption Directive: This directive proposes harmonized, stricter regulations for member states, including mandatory corporate criminal liability, broader bribery coverage, turnover-based sanctions, and robust whistleblower protections.
  • ISO 37001:2025 and OECD: The 2025 revision of ISO 37001 enhances focus on risk assessment, third‑party due diligence, sharper KPIs, and seamless integration with other management systems. Similarly, the OECD Anti‑Bribery Convention remains foundational for national ABAC reforms.

As compliance demands grow, the requirements for data—including vendor vetting, continuous monitoring, and audit trails—are increasingly complex. Organizations need a robust and central technology framework that not only tracks risk but also transparently communicates it to all stakeholders.

ABAC + TPRM: Aligning for Action and Advantage

Effective third-party risk management (TPRM) is essential for strengthening the overall compliance chain. When ABAC is integrated into TPRM, organizations can transform risk from a background concern to a manageable and strategic element of their business.

By embedding ABAC due diligence and monitoring throughout the TPRM lifecycle, organizations can:

This proactive approach transcends traditional risk management—it embodies risk leadership, fostering trust with regulators while demonstrating your organization’s resilience in a competitive market.

Continuous Assurance

The days of cobbling together program evidence from email trails, siloed spreadsheets, and periodic check-ins are over. Modern ABAC programs, like Aravo’s Intelligence First™ Platform, leverage automation to streamline processes and maintain strong audit trails, allowing teams to approach audits with confidence.

Continuous improvement, through regular policy reviews and training, helps organizations stay ahead of potential threats.

A Call to Collective Integrity (and Action)

Every risk professional knows compliance isn’t a box-ticking exercise. It is a commitment to integrity, transparency, and operational excellence. When organizations align ABAC and TPRM, they avoid more than fines or reputational fallout. They create a culture where ethical decision-making becomes a genuine advantage.

Aravo’s ABAC Compliance solution supports this by enabling a comprehensive due diligence program with pre-built ABAC assessments and workflows. Teams get the structure they need and the flexibility to take a truly risk-oriented approach to compliance. Aravo brings the entire ABAC program into a single cloud suite, simplifies execution, and reduces manual effort. With AI-assisted decision-making, teams gain added clarity and context so they can identify hidden risks and make confident, informed decisions.
