Go the Distance: Optimizing and Automating Your TPRM Technology

I’ve been running long-distance races for over 20 years. As an endurance runner, I’ve tackled everything from 5Ks to half-marathons. My favorite races are trail runs that weave through mountainous terrain, hilly countrysides, rocky paths, and twisting forest routes.

One race stands out in particular: an 8-miler hosted by Vagabond Endurance in Waxhaw, North Carolina, on October 29, 2022 —it’s the only race where I won first place. What made it even better was that my younger brother, running the 31-mile ultra at the same event, won first place too. Two brothers, two medals, one unforgettable day.

That win didn’t just happen. It came from months of structured preparation by logging base mileage, fine-tuning pace, managing nutrition, recovery, and mental focus. Training with my brother made all the difference. We pushed each other, stayed disciplined, and optimized every part of the process to perform our best when it mattered most.

That same principle of preparation, optimization, and endurance applies directly to Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM). Today’s risk landscape is an ultramarathon in its own right: complex, unpredictable, and demanding consistency over the long haul. Too often, organizations rely on outdated tools and manual processes that, much like poor training, slow them down and limit visibility. The result is inefficiency, inconsistent oversight, and missed warning signs that could have been prevented.

Just as endurance running requires the right strategy, training plan, and equipment to reach the finish line, successful TPRM depends on alignment: clear objectives, defined roles, an achievable roadmap, and measurable success metrics.

To reach peak performance, organizations must take inventory of their current technologies and understand how automation can bring them together into one cohesive, intelligent framework.

In the sections that follow, we’ll explore three key areas where TPRM programs can optimize their tools and automation to move faster, respond with precision, and stay resilient, no matter how the risk terrain shifts.

1. Laying the Foundation: Building Base Mileage Through Data Discipline

Every training plan begins with foundational base mileage; slow, steady runs that build endurance. In TPRM, programs should start with technology that provides foundational workflow automation, designed to handle increasing complexity as internal requirements and external regulations evolve.

Yet too many organizations skip this critical phase, focusing instead on collecting third-party data from multiple sources: internal stakeholders, external contacts, subscription data providers, and internal systems. Without a structured foundation for managing this data, information ends up scattered across spreadsheets, legacy systems, and disconnected tools, making it nearly impossible to get a clear view of performance or risk.

Just as inconsistent training leads to early fatigue, fragmented data leads to missteps down the line. Building a disciplined data foundation that is centralized, structured, and repeatable creates the strength to go the distance. It may not be the flashiest part of the process, but it is the part that holds everything else together.

2. Finding Your Stride: Streamlining Workflows and Removing Friction

Once a runner builds endurance, the next focus is efficiency: long, smooth strides with minimal wasted motion. Many organizations, however, struggle to achieve this in their workflows. Manual reviews pile up, redundant approvals slow progress, and critical tasks can easily get lost in the shuffle. That’s why it’s essential to have TPRM technology that provides clear visibility into workflow bottlenecks through intuitive visuals, including bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, trend lines, tables, and more.

When workflows are streamlined and automation is applied thoughtfully, the entire rhythm changes. Tasks flow seamlessly, teams stay aligned, and the organization hits its stride. Energy that was once spent on repetitive processes is now redirected toward meaningful progress, and the pace becomes not just faster, but sustainable.

3. Running Together: Partnering for Long-Term Success

Even the most disciplined runner hits plateaus. Motivation dips, plans stall, and sometimes, a nudge from a running partner is all it takes to stay on track. Organizations face a similar challenge with TPRM technology: the tools alone can only take them so far before fatigue, uncertainty, or stalled progress sets in.

This is where strong partnerships make all the difference. Organizations shouldn’t just ask whether a technology partner can support their program; they need to know how that partner will do it. Understanding a technology provider’s Professional Services and Premium Support offerings is key. Like seasoned training partners, they help teams refine their approach, stay accountable, and maintain momentum through the toughest challenges. The right support system ensures organizations can push through the critical “miles” that matter most.

The TPRM Training Plan

To build a TPRM program that stands on a strong foundation and performs optimally across the entire third-party lifecycle, a well-designed plan is essential. Aravo provides organizations with a best-practice approach called the Strategic Alignment Framework, which leverages platform capabilities and program expertise to help TPRM programs move faster, respond smarter, and remain resilient in even the most challenging risk environments.

Just like base mileage in endurance training, Aravo’s Intelligence-First Framework ensures third-party data is complete, accurate, and actionable. By consolidating profiles into a unified view, it eliminates gaps and inconsistencies, giving teams the confidence to make decisions without hesitation. The Intelligence Risk Ecosystem, which is Aravo’s dynamic integration framework, keeps everything in sync by connecting internal systems and external solutions to create one holistic experience.

Once TPRM programs are up and running, the focus shifts to running smart. Aravo’s Premium Support and Professional Services guide teams in refining processes, resolving challenges, and maintaining momentum, ensuring that TPRM programs don’t just reach the finish line—they excel.

The question is: Is your TPRM program built with the foundation, intelligence, and support it needs – not just to keep up, but to thrive in today’s evolving risk landscape?
